GEORGE TOWN: Barisan Nasional leaders have hit out at Penang for wanting to replace its official Proton V6 fleet with foreign cars.
State Opposition Leader Datuk Azhar Ibrahim and Gerakan vice-president Huan Cheng Guan said the move went against Pakatan Rakyat's competency, accountability and transparency (CAT) philosophy.
"Lim is a 'copy-CAT' of the Perak government. They just want to drive new cars and are using poor service and high maintenance cost as excuses.
"What is the point of travelling economy class and saying that you want to save the rakyat's money when you are planning to go out and get brand new foreign cars?
"There are so many Proton workshops around — don't tell me all of them are expensive and offer poor services," Azhar said, adding that there would not be "tens of thousands" of Proton cars on the road if the national car was so bad.
Slamming Pakatan for "another unpatriotic act," Huan said replacing the fleet was a waste of money.
"New cars also need to be maintained — there is no escape.
"By buying new cars, the state would incur much higher expenses because they have to pay the purchase price plus the usual maintenance charges," he said, adding that there were many competent Proton workshops that provided good service.
On Monday, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said Penang would follow Perak's lead and change its official cars to cheaper foreign cars when the current Proton Perdana V6s needed to be replaced.
